Flight hasn’t departed?

If it has not left, open My Trips now to review changing or cancelling before departure. Available credit, fees and refund options depend on your ticket. 2

Act before departure →

Flight already left?

If your Delta flight has already left, contact Delta immediately through its official missed-flight help page or an airport representative. Ask about both rebooking and the remaining flights in your itinerary. A missed outbound can put your return at risk too. 1

Check what is still usable →

The first question is not “How much is the fee?” It is “What happened—and what is still usable?”

Start with what happened

Your situationYour first move
You are running late; the flight has not departedOpen My Trips and seek a change or cancellation before departure.
You arrived after departureAsk Delta to review your ticket status, rebooking options and remaining itinerary immediately.
A delayed or cancelled flight caused you to miss an onward flight on the same ticketAsk for disruption rebooking, rather than treating it as a voluntary missed flight.
You booked the onward flight on a separate ticketContact that airline before its departure. Separate-ticket protection can be different.

These paths lead to different rules. Arriving late at the airport is not the same situation as an airline disruption breaking your connection. 1, 2, 3, 4

02 / The guide

Your flight has not left. Act now.

Open your reservation and check the available change and cancellation options. If you cannot complete the action online, contact Delta—or your ticketing agency—immediately. Save the confirmation of any completed change or cancellation. 2

Delta's no-show policy requires action before departure to retain ticket value, subject to the ticket's conditions. Do not assume that joining a phone queue has changed the reservation. 6

A few minutes spent protecting the ticket can matter more than a frantic search for another flight.

03 / The guide

Your flight has left. Is the ticket already lost?

Do not assume it is safe. Do not assume nobody can help, either.

Delta's agency guidance describes a limited post-departure possibility: an agent may be able to change and reissue a ticket while its flight coupons are still open. Suspended coupons have no remaining value under that policy. A flight coupon is the ticket record for a flight segment—not a discount voucher. 12

Ask: “Can you check whether my unused flight segments are still open and whether this ticket can be reissued?”

This is a possibility to investigate immediately, not a guaranteed grace period. The official sources reviewed for this guide do not promise everyone a two-hour window or free rebooking. 1, 12

04 / The guide

Protect the return flight, not just today's departure

Missed outbound → remaining flights may be cancelled → check the whole itinerary.

Delta's U.S. contract allows it to cancel remaining flights when a passenger fails to appear without changing or cancelling before departure. Do not buy a replacement outbound and assume the original return is still available. 7

Ask the agent to confirm:

  • Which onward and return flights remain confirmed?
  • Does the ticket need to be reissued?
  • If you arrange your own outbound, what must happen to preserve the rest of the trip?

Get the updated itinerary and check it yourself.

05 / The guide

How much does missing a Delta flight cost?

There is no useful universal price to promise. Separate the possible charges before comparing options.

CostWhat to check
Fare differenceDoes the replacement flight cost more?
Change or cancellation feeDoes your fare and journey origin require one?
Lost ticket valueHas the original ticket become unusable under the no-show rules?
New ticketIs this a separate purchase rather than a change?

Delta currently waives change fees for Classic, Extra and refundable experiences originating in the U.S. and Canada, but a higher replacement fare can still cost more. Basic tickets have different conditions. Other origins can carry change fees. Those voluntary-change benefits do not undo a no-show. 5, 6

Compare the complete offer

Option A: Delta's confirmed rebooking quote

Additional payment + arrival time + any extra overnight or transfer costs.

Option B: A new ticket

New fare + baggage and seat extras + transfers + the confirmed consequences for your original itinerary.

Use actual quotes. A cheap new outbound can become expensive if you have not resolved the original return.

Basic, refundable and miles tickets

  • Basic: Do not rely on old blanket advice that every Basic ticket is unchangeable. Delta currently permits certain changes or cancellations for a fee; origin and fare conditions matter. 5
  • Refundable: Do not treat “refundable” as permission to disappear. Delta's published no-show policy includes refundable tickets issued on or after 8 October 2025. Applicable law can override contractual restrictions. 6
  • SkyMiles: Check the rules for your award. Delta says Basic award changes and cancellations can carry a fee in miles, with the remainder redeposited. Do not assume your miles automatically return after a no-show. 5, 6

Delta's delay broke your connection? Take the disruption route.

For covered flights to, from or within the U.S., Delta's customer service plan says it will rebook passengers affected by a significant delay, cancellation or misconnection on the next available Delta flight at no additional cost. If a Delta flight is unavailable, it describes arranging an alternative with an airline that has a ticketing agreement with Delta. 3

Start with the replacement offered in My Trips, then ask for help if it does not work for you. Confirm the destination, connection and arrival date before accepting.

Same cancellation. Different kinds of help.

QuestionWhat decides the answer?
Can Delta rebook me after a disrupted connection? The applicable disruption rules and available flights.
Will Delta cover a hotel or meals? The cause of the disruption and the conditions of its commitments.
Can I choose a refund instead?Whether the cancellation or significant change qualifies, and whether you decline replacement travel and credit.

For disruptions within Delta's control, its plan includes overnight hotel and ground-transport commitments when you are away from home or destination, subject to the stated conditions and availability. It also provides meals or meal vouchers when a cancellation or delay makes you wait at least three hours beyond scheduled departure. Ask about assistance before making expensive arrangements. 3

A weather cancellation can qualify for a ticket refund even when it does not trigger Delta's hotel commitment. Under U.S. DOT rules, the cancellation's cause does not remove refund rights if you decline travel and compensation offered instead. Taking the replacement flight generally does not entitle you to a refund for that transportation as well. 8

Separate tickets change the risk

The ticket makes the difference

Same missed connection.
Different protection.

One ticket

One connected journey.

An airline disruption that breaks the connection belongs in the disruption-rebooking conversation.

Check rebooking assistance →

Separate tickets

Two booking problems.

Contact the onward airline promptly. A delayed first flight does not automatically protect a separately ticketed connection.

Check Delta’s separate-ticket guidance ↗
Illustrative routes. Baggage through-checking alone does not establish connection protection.

Booking two flights that connect geographically does not necessarily create one protected connection.

Delta's agency guidance says it is not responsible for missed connections to separately ticketed flights, including those caused by flight delays. Some separate-ticket itineraries qualify for through-checked baggage; that does not by itself promise connection protection. 4

Ask “Is this one ticket?”—not just “Is it all in my app?”

Contact the onward carrier or agency promptly and ask whether it offers an exception or another solution. Do not assume a new flight will be free.

What about standby, the $75 fee and the “flat-tire rule”?

These are easy to mix up.

ClaimWhat to know
“I can always pay $75 after missing my flight.”$75 is Delta's published Same-Day Confirmed fee, with waivers and eligibility conditions. It is not a universal missed-flight rescue price.
“Free standby means I can take the next flight.”Delta's ordinary Same-Day Standby product concerns an earlier flight and is subject to restrictions and availability. It does not guarantee a seat after a no-show.
“Basic gets the same same-day options.”Delta excludes Basic experiences from these ordinary same-day products.

These products have route, timing and availability restrictions. Ask which option the agent is actually offering: confirmed rebooking, standby or a new ticket. 9

For a flat tire, traffic or another unexpected emergency, explain the circumstances honestly and ask whether help is available. A discretionary accommodation is not a published entitlement to a two-hour grace period. 6

09 / The guide

Your bag may be on a different journey

Keep your bag-tag receipt. Ask an agent where the bag is and what happens if you are rebooked, change airports or stop travelling. Delta provides checked-bag tracking; if your bag is delayed at your arrival airport, report it to the Baggage Service Office and keep the reference number. 10

Before leaving the airport, ask:

  • Is the bag travelling, being held or available for collection?
  • Does my new itinerary require any baggage action?
  • Where and how will I receive it?

Do not assume a fresh ticket automatically reconnects you with your checked bag.

Agency booking, partner flight or international trip?

Booked through an agency: Delta directs passengers needing changes or cancellations to their ticketing agent. Tell the agency immediately if departure is close or has passed. 5

Another airline operates the flight: Check the operating airline's airport deadlines and who can service the ticket. Delta's domestic contract distinguishes interline journeys, for which the operating carrier's conditions can apply. 7

Travelling internationally: Do not use the domestic deadline card below. Check the applicable contract, local passenger rights and any documents needed for a new routing.

An emergency prevented travel: Keep relevant records and ask Delta, your agency and any insurer about available assistance. Do not assume every illness, traffic delay or missed departure creates the same exception.

Three clocks. One departure.

For a typical Delta domestic departure from a U.S. airport:

Before scheduled departure

Your domestic departure countdown.

45min

Checked bags

Usual bag-acceptance deadline.

30min

No checked bag

Usual check-in deadline.

15min

At the gate

Ready to board, not arriving at security.

Typical U.S. domestic departures only. Airport exceptions apply. JFK’s domestic checked-bag minimum, for example, is 60 minutes. Check your airport’s requirements ↗

Departure time is not the time to arrive at the gate. Online check-in is not a substitute for being there.

[Brief factual explanation.] Please check my unused ticket segments, available rebooking options and all remaining flights, including my return. Before I accept a change, please confirm the total extra cost, whether the seat is confirmed or standby, and what happens to my checked bag.”

01 / The feeIs $75 the standard fee for any missed Delta flight?Reveal answer +Hide answer −

No. That is a different product.

The published $75 fee is for eligible Same-Day Confirmed changes. It is not a universal price for rescuing a missed flight.

Read the same-day conditions ↗
02 / The returnI bought another outbound. Is my original return safe?Reveal answer +Hide answer −

Do not assume it is.

Delta warns that a missed flight can affect the entire itinerary, including the return. Confirm the remaining flights with Delta or your ticket issuer.

03 / The fareMy ticket is refundable. Can I just skip departure?Reveal answer +Hide answer −

Do not rely on that label.

Delta’s published no-show policy includes refundable tickets issued on or after 8 October 2025. Change or cancel before departure; applicable law can override restrictions.

04 / The seatFree standby means a guaranteed seat. Correct?Reveal answer +Hide answer −

No. Standby is conditional.

Delta’s ordinary Same-Day Standby product depends on eligibility and an available seat, and concerns an earlier flight. It does not guarantee a seat after a no-show.

Frequently asked questions

Will Delta automatically put me on the next flight?

Do not assume this after arriving late. Contact Delta to review your options. Airline-caused disruption rebooking follows a different policy from a voluntary missed departure. 1, 3

Can I miss the outbound and use my return?

Not safely without resolving the itinerary. Delta may cancel remaining flights after a no-show. Have the return checked before making alternative outbound arrangements. 7

Does checking in online prevent no-show consequences?

No. You must also meet the applicable boarding deadline. A boarding pass does not keep the gate open. 7, 11

Can I get a refund because I reached the airport late?

For a nonrefundable ticket, arriving late when the flight operated as scheduled does not itself create a U.S. DOT refund entitlement. Fare conditions, applicable law and airline disruption are separate questions. 8

What if the app will not let me change anything?

Contact Delta or your ticketing agency promptly. Some tickets and circumstances require assisted servicing. Ask for the ticket status and available options rather than repeatedly retrying the same screen. 5

Should I buy another ticket immediately?

Compare a confirmed quote with a new-ticket price, but first establish what happens to the rest of your original itinerary. A replacement purchase does not itself repair it. 1, 7
